The Subarnapur District is known for its rich cultural heritage, arts and crafts. The textiles works of Subarnapur, Brass metal works and Philigri crafts of Tarva and Binka, Stone carving of Ulunda and Paddy crafts of Dunguripali have earned worldwide reputation.

Subarnapur District was created in Revenue & Excise Department Notification No. 14218/R DT. 27.3.1993. It was carved out from the Balangir District and started functioning w.e.f. 1.4.1993. The District comprises two Sub–division namely Subarnapur and Birmaharajpur and six Tahasil i.e. Sonepur, Binka, Rampur, Ulunda, Tarava & Birmaharajpur.
